[en] Encoding issues, and an article on the "blogs and business" course Anne Dominique and I are preparing.

My Categories are a Mess [en]

Have you noticed how many categories this blog of mine has? Disastrous. When I migrated to Movable Type in 2004, the main thing I was excited about was being able to use multiple categories for my posts. It got a little bit out of hand. Six months later I switched to WordPress and in the process, wrote a plugin to help me tame my categories. I never really finished sorting everything.

Between then and now, Technorati got tagified. I love tags. Tags are great. Tags are not Categories. Did I mention I love tags? Anyway, at some point, before Technorati tagging, I think I tried to use some of my categories as tags. So, my categories are a mess. Plus, the category hierarchy is mid-way between old categories I was trying to clean up and a new structure which is maybe not that well adapted to the current state of my blog (I think I use the same 5-10 categories all the time). So, I need less categories. But I also need to convert some of my categories into tags. See me coming?

Yep, one of the summer projects will be writing a plugin to convert my categories to tags, and (who knows?) maybe re-writing Batch Categories for WordPress 2.0. But not now. No.

La fin des ennuis [fr]

[en] Backup server working (proof: you're seeing this). Main server upgrade OK, we just need a car to take it back home. Things should be up by Wednesday, with a functional backup server too. Yay! See why I'm not in the hosting business?

Use Gmail or SpamCop e-mail adresses to reach me, the other ones are not functioning right now.

  • d’une part pour vous signifier que l’indisponibilité des sites hébergés sur ce serveur n’est pas “normale”, et que nous sommes en train de préparer un changement de machine (ce qui occasionnera une mise hors service à  un moment donné d’ici la fin de l’année);

Now that I have two blogs, the question that plagues me every now and again is “which blog should I post this to?”

The focus of each of my two blogs is pretty clear to me: this blog is the “serious, intellectual, professional” one, hopefully of interest to people who do not know me personally. The Cheese Sandwich Blog, on the other hand, is a place where I can scribble notes without wondering if it’s interesting to the public at large. It is where I ramble on about my life, show off my photographs, and give knee-jerk feedback about applications that I use.

However, I’ve been hesitating about where to publish the two following posts:

  • a post reflecting on the relative importance of music and lyrics in my appreciation of songs;
  • a post about a recent photograph of mine which suddenly became interesting, and some thoughts about the fact that it is not necessarily my best photograph ever, even though it is currently my most interesting photograph.

I started out wanting to write these posts on my other blog, but changed my mind halfway, and now I think they would be more at their place here. What do you think?

Problèmes de serveur [fr]

[en] The server which hosts this site and a bunch of others is suffering from hardware problems. It's back up now, but could go down any moment. The Cheese Sandwich Blog and Flickr photos are not impacted. We're going to be migrating to another server, but in the meantime availibility of the various domains might be spotty.

Over the years, I’ve come to have certain standards for what I post in this weblog. Posts tend to be long. They are often (not always) of (somewhat) general (geeky) interest.

I rarely make a post just to write a few lines about what is going on in my life. This doesn’t seem to be the right place anymore. For important events, yes. But small things seem out of place here.

I got an invitation for wordpress.com, and opened a blog there. I’ve been posting silly things on it, but my close friends and my Grandma might like it. It has no ambitions for recognition, respectability, or audience. It’s just some bits of my life.

We’ll see how things work out. Consider it as en experiment. I know things have been pretty calm around here and almost reached a standstill at some point. My life has changed a lot (and positively!) during the past year, and I cannot help but notice that my writing impulses have changed. I expect that the respective roles of my two blogs will be defined by usage over the next weeks or months.

So… if you think I’m being silent, go and have a peek at Stephanie’s Cheese Sandwich Blog. And keep watching this space — it’s by no means closed.

Messing Around [en]

Upgraded WordPress. Things might be a bit broken.

I’ve installed the latest WordPress nightly, so things might not look quite right around here for some time.

Expect the usual pink look to be back soon.
