Unbelievable: Twitter Hides Partial Conversations AGAIN [en]

This morning, I see a small notice on Twitter once I’ve logged in: they’ve done a “small settings update” involving @replies.

“Small settings update”? You have to be kidding me. What they’ve done is once again removed partial conversations (@replies from people you know to people you don’t know) from the stream. Yes, two years later (I wrote Twitter: We Love Our Partial Conversations in May 2007, and they fixed it soon after), they’ve done it again.

Given Twitter Support is all but nonexistant nowadays (another sad turn of things) please join us on this Get Satisfaction thread to express our disappointment at the removal of the possibility to read all @replies from our friends.

Feedly: More Than a Newsreader, Maybe Your Search Engine of Tomorrow? [en]

A bit over a year ago, I switched from Google Reader to Feedly. I have a troubled history with newsreaders: I tend to not use them, partly because I don’t really read blogs. But I used Google Reader for some time, and then Feedly. I really like Feedly. Really. (Plus, it saved 4 months of posts for CTTS after the dropped database disaster.)

All this to say that for many months, I have not really opened Feedly, and I feel kind of sad/bad about it. Twitter and Tumblr are my main sources of “new information”, and I’d love to find a way to use Feedly in a way that works for me. But it just doesn’t seem to happen.

A couple of weeks back, I saw this tweet from Ewan:

He says that he has sorted his feeds into “30 must-read-daily RSS feeds, with the other 2000 sitting behind as personal search engine”.

Whee! For some time now, I’ve been convinced that the future lies with allowing search in subsets of the web. There’s too much stuff out there, right? Also, in this era of partial attention (which I don’t consider to be a bad thing, in the “keeping a distracted eye on” sense), you often end up trying to “refind” something you know you’ve seen (but where?) — just like I had to dig out Ewan’s tweet ten days after I’d seen it in passing.

That’s why I like Lijit, for example (I’ve put the search box back here on CTTS, by the way): it allows me or my readers to do a search on “my stuff”, including CTTS, Digital Crumble, Twitter, del.icio.us… Sometimes I know I’ve said something, but I can’t for the life of me remember where (see this? having to search your own words…)

Feedly is pretty good at allowing you to search all the stuff you’ve subscribed to:

It offers a mix of a little bit of generally popular stuff with “your sources”. I like that. So, I like Ewan’s idea of feed subscription as “add this to my search sources” rather than “oooh, I’m going to read this every day”.

I have to say I’m interested in hearing about how you use Feedly or Google Reader (particularly the social aspects) if you’re not a “religious-daily” newsreader enthusiast. There has to be something between “keeping up with my feeds” and “never opening my feedreader”.

Today is Backup Awareness Day! [en]

Two months ago, on February 24th, I hit the wrong “Drop” button in PhpMyAdmin, resulting in the immediate deletion of the blog you’re reading. I didn’t know when I had last backed it up.

The story ends well, though it cost me (and others) many hours (days, actually) of work to get the whole of Climb to the Stars back online again.

I’ve always been careless about backups. Like many of you, probably. We can afford to be careless because accidents don’t happen very often, and as with Black Swans, we are under the mistaken belief that having been safe in the past will keep us safe in the future. Not so. As I like to repeat, the first time a disaster happens, well, it had never happened till then.

So, I’ve decided to declare the 24th of each month “Backup Awareness Day”. Here’s what it’s about:

  • Back up your files.
  • Back up your website.
  • Blog about the importance of backing up (sharing tips, stories, advice).
  • Tell your friends to back up.
  • Help your friends back up.
  • Put in place automatic backup systems.

Bottom-line: decrease the number of people who never back up, or back up so infrequently they’ll be in a real mess if things go wrong.

Now, perfectionism is the biggest enemy to getting things done. Backup Awareness Day does not mean that you have to do all this. Here are a few ideas to get your started (better a bad backup than no backup at all):

  • If Time Machine (or any other regular backup system you use for your computer) has been telling you it hasn’t done a backup in ages, stop what you’re doing right now and plug it in.
  • If you use WordPress, when was the last time you went to Tools > Export to make a quick backup? It’s not the best way to do it, but in my case, it saved CTTS.
  • Do you use something like Mozy to have a remote backup of your most important files? Time to sign up, maybe.
  • Are you working on important documents that exist only on your computer, which is never backed up? At the minimum, pick up a thumb drive and copy them onto it — or send yourself an e-mail with the files as attachment, if your e-mail is stored outside your computer (Gmail, for example).
  • Do you have an automatic backup set up for your database or website? Set some time aside on Backup Awareness Day to figure out cron.
  • When did you make the last dump of your MySQL database? Head over to PhpMyAdmin, or the command line (it’s mysqldump --opt -u user -p databasename > my-dirty-backup.sql)
  • Do you have the backup thing all figured out? Write a post for your readers with a few tips or tutorials to help them along. (Tag your posts “backupawarenessday” — I thought about “BAD” but that wasn’t really optimal ;-))

Commentaires et bonnes manières: 8 conseils [fr]

Allez, je vais faire un peu ma Nadine de Rothschild, et vous proposer une petite séance de savoir-vivre blogosphérique. Les manières pour les manières, c’est clair, c’est barbant, mais elles ont généralement un sens. En l’occurence, faire preuve de bonnes manières lorsque l’on laisse un commentaire sur le blog de quelqu’un, c’est avant tout:

  • s’assurer que celui-ci ne sera pas confondu avec du spam
  • lui assurer au moins une chance de publication.

Mais de quelles bonnes manières est-ce que je parle? Etre poli, c’est bien joli (en effet, même sur un blog, être respectueux et éviter d’insulter son prochain passe toujours bien) — mais est-ce que ça m’évitera d’être confondu avec un spammeur?

Je m’explique un peu avant de vous donner ma petite liste de préceptes à suivre (ou ne pas suivre). Les spammeurs sont malins. Les créateurs de filtres anti-spam (comme Akismet) le sont aussi. On assiste à une véritable course aux armements, et les spammeurs font tout ce qu’ils peuvent pour embrouiller les filtres à spam, et faire en sorte que leur spam ressemble à un véritable commentaire. (C’est exactement le même processus pour ce qui est du spam d’e-mails.) Parfois, il n’est pas aisé de reconnaître au premier coup d’oeil (même pour un blogueur expérimenté) s’il s’agit ou non de spam.

Une autre plaie des commentaires de blog, c’est la déferlante de marketeux ou autres individus auto-promotionnels maladroits ou carrément imbéciles: mon blog n’est pas une plate-forme de promotion pour autrui, et l’art de ramener du traffic vers son blog en laissant ailleurs des commentaires est délicat, et doit être manié avec goût.

Donc, histoire d’éviter que votre commentaire se retrouve à la poubelle (ou pire, dans le piège à spam), voici ce que je vous recommande.

  1. Signez de votre nom: vous avez un nom, utilisez-le. Une discussion a lieu entre êtres humains. Si vous signez du nom de votre boîte, c’est au mieux déplaisant (je ne discute pas avec des boîtes, moi), au pire une utilisation de mon blog comme plateforme publicitaire. Il va sans dire qu’un pseudonyme bien établi peut servir de nom, mais attention: je ne fais pas une enquête en ligne au sujet de l’auteur de chaque commentaire que je dois approuver, donc à vos risques et périls.
  2. Donnez une URL personnelle: à la base, les commentaires se faisaient entre blogueurs, et le champ URL ou “site web” était là, bien évidemment, pour qu’on y mette l’adresse de son blog. L’adresse, donc, d’un site personnel qui pourra informer sur l’auteur du commentaire. En près de neuf ans, le paysage a certes changé, mais si l’URL que vous fournissez ne semble pas mener au “site de quelqu’un”, mauvais point. Faire un lien vers un article particulier pue l’auto-promo excessive, la plupart du temps. Un lien vers le site de son entreprise, c’est limite: n’avez-vous pas d’autre identité que celle d’employé? Si vous êtes là pour représenter votre boîte, à la limite… mais cela ne marchera bien que dans un contexte de support.
  3. Orthographe! Je sais que je suis parfois une pinailleuse sur ce sujet (ex-prof de français, on ne se refait pas), mais là aussi, il y a les limites raisonnables et le dépassement de ces limites. Language SMS-kikou-lolllll? Passez votre chemin (votre commentaire, en tous cas, passera le sien). Ponctuation et orthographe frisant l’illétrisme? Préférez un commentaire vidéo (lien Seesmic en bas de chaque champ de commentaires). On a le droit de faire des fautes, tout comme on a le droit de sortir mal vêtu. Mais pas tout nu.
  4. Ajoutez de la valeur: de nombreux spammeurs essaient de pourrir les filtres en laissant des commentaires gentils comme “super article!” ou encore “merci, ça m’a été très utile”. On apprend vite à ne pas se laisser aveugler par la flatterie! Si vous laissez un commentaire, assurez-vous que vous apportez quelque chose aux lecteurs futurs de l’article commenté. Sinon… abstenez-vous. Si on se connaît, c’est différent, mais si on ne se connaît pas, s’arrêter pour “lâcher un comm'” un peu vide, ce n’est pas une entrée en matière très respectueuse de l’autre.
  5. Freinez vos élans dissertatifs: les commentaires sont là pour apporter des compléments d’information à l’article principal, ou héberger un débat ou une discussion y prenant naissance. Veillez donc à ce que vos contributions soient digérables dans un contexte conversationnel. S’il vous prend l’envie de partir dans une envolée lyrique sans fin, ou de rédiger sur un coup de tête votre travail de thèse, votre blog est le meilleur endroit pour le faire. Laissez ensuite un commentaire aux dimensions modestes incluant un lien vers votre article. Pas de blog? C’est par ici. Je ne dis pas qu’on ne peut pas faire de longs commentaires, juste… qu’il y a des limites. (Une dissertation dans les commentaires d’autrui, c’est soit dit en passant le meilleur moyen de tuer toute conversation en ayant justement l’air de lancer le débat.)
  6. Restez dans le sujet: l’article que vous commentez parle d’un problème de ventilateur MacBook? Evitez d’y laisser un commentaire détaillant votre dernière visite de Rome (sauf éventuellement si c’est en lien avec un problème de ventilateur MacBook). Les conversations dévient, on peut parler de choses en rapport par association, mais si le lien n’est pas évident, ça ne fait pas de mal d’expliquer pourquoi on laisse le commentaire qu’on laisse.
  7. Publicisez avec doigté: si vous êtes là pour (entre autres, on l’espère) attirer l’attention sur un autre produit ou article, réfléchissez à deux fois et dégainez votre tact. Est-ce que votre commentaire apporte véritablement quelque chose aux autres lecteurs, ou n’est-il qu’un prétexte à pousser un lien, un nom, ou une idée? Avez vous assez de “capital social” pour le faire? (Tiens, une idée d’article vient de germer dans mon cerveau…) — Chez moi, les commentaires trop franchement publicitaires (à plus forte raison si je n’en connais pas l’auteur) passent direct à la trappe. Dans le doute, abstenez-vous.
  8. Politesse, respect, tout ça: ça ne fait jamais de mal de le redire, mais personne n’est obligé d’accepter dans son salon un individu irrespectueux, malpoli, et qui crache par terre. Vos commentaires sont votre présence dans le salon du blogueur qui les héberge. On peut ne pas être d’accord (c’est même là pour ça, les commentaires) — mais un minimum de politesse et de respect s’impose.

Comme vous le voyez, les trois premiers conseils ont vraiment trait à la forme ou aux métadonnées de votre commentaire. C’est la première chose que regardera celui qui modère les commentaires (avec un coup d’oeil au contenu).

Et vous autres blogueurs, quelle politique exercez-vous pour la validation de commentaires sur votre blog? Durant longtemps, j’ai tout tout tout publié (sauf le spam), mais ces dernières années, le spam devient parfois franchement difficile à distinguer de certains commentaires vides de contenu et de présence humaine, et je sabre donc plus lourdement qu’auparavant dans les commentaires “douteux”.

Nouveau site TL [fr]

Alors, à ce qu’il paraît, le nouveau site des TL est optimisé pour la consultation par téléphone mobile. Il y a même à l’arrêt de bus une affichette arborant fièrement un iPhone en pleine action.

Ni une, ni deux, je m’y colle: horaires en temps réel, yes!, et un prometteur My TL.

Je clique, je suis le lien “s’enregistrer” et… Je me retrouve à la page d’accueil. Caramba!

…et que diriez-vous d’utiliser le système de géolocalisation de l’iPhone pour déterminer à quel arrêt je suis?

PJW Blogminder Plugin for WordPress [en]

[fr] J'en rêvais, on m'a prise au mot: un plugin qui vous envoie une alerte si vous n'avez pas publié quoi que ce soit sur votre blog depuis x jours (entre un et sept jours). Histoire d'éviter que la semaine entière passe sans s'en rendre compte!

A few days, ago, I was dreaming out loud on Twitter about a plugin which would let me know when I hadn’t published anything on my blog after a certain number of days. I guess that, once again, I’d reached the end of a week and realised that I had not written a single thing on CTTS.

Well, my wish was heard, and Peter Westwood has just released the PJW Blogminder plugin. The plugin adds a simple option to your profile page, where you can request a reminder if you haven’t published anything in the last few days (set the number of days between one and seven).

WordPress on my iPhone [en]

Wow, just checking out the new WordPress iPhone app. It now allows comment moderation management, post and page editing, as well as saving non-local drafts. I’m going to start using it regularly… Though maybe not for writing my usual unending posts for CTTS!

To Be or Not to Be a New Media Strategist [en]

For years now (since I became self-employed, and maybe even before) I’ve been struggling to define myself and what I do. There are two main components to this problem, as I see it:

  • working in a fast-moving, cutting-edge field, where I’m creating my job and job description as I go along, and boldly going where none have gone before (haha)
  • inside that field, having a bit of a “generalist specialist” profile, which means that I do tons of different things which don’t always seem to go together (talk about teenager/education issues online; give strategic advice to startups; install blogs and teach people how to use them; etc)

Now, along my freelancing career, I’ve called myself a bunch of things (non-exhaustive list following):

  • blogging consultant
  • social sofware consultant
  • social media consultant
  • web consultant and commentator
  • 2.0 consultant

More recently, I more or less dropped the whole title thing, going for taglines like “I help you understand the internet better” and even giving up almost entirely before Lift09 and having “Online Person” written on my badge.

So, again: part of the problem is me (and my issues with defining myself) and another is the field in which I am. High tech and social media is a bubbly field. An expression is hot one day and cold the other. Hot in some circles, passé in others.

Take “blogging consultant”: when I started out, there were hardly any blogging consultants around. A year or so later, everybody and his dog who knew how to set up WordPress suddenly started calling themselves that. I remember talking to a friend some years ago: his company had hired a “blogging consultant” and we were both appalled at the kind of advice he was giving and things he was doing.

So at some point, to distance myself from such people (newcomers clearly more intent in blinding their clients with buzzwords), I stopped calling myself a “blogging consultant”.

Basically, it’s been more or less the same problem for all the titles I’ve tried to wear (like clothes).

Now, back to my own issue: the trouble I have explaining and defining what I do. I had a breakthrough conversation with Florian Egger at the Lift09 party (despite the dreadfully loud music during what was supposed to be a “networking lounge” time slot).

Here’s the image I like to use to explain this breakthrough: what I do could be represented by a tree. There are many branches and leaves, and a trunk. Until then, when I was asked what I did, I would talk about the leaves and the branches, but I never managed to pinpoint what the trunk was. It left an impression that what I was doing was ill-defined, scattered.

I have now understood that the trunk of what I do is new media-related strategic consulting, thanks to Florian who made me go through example after example of what I did, concluding each one with “well, that’s strategy too, if you think of it” — and I’d go “no, it’s not strategy… oh, actually, yes, I see what you mean… it is!”

So, that would make me a New Media Strategist. It sounds nice. And it fits. You know, like when you finally find a pair of trousers that seems to have been stitched for you?

And clearly, being able to say “I do strategic consulting” sounds way better than “well, I know a helluvalot of a stuff about the internet, and all this so-called web2.0 stuff, and I’m really good at explaining it and helping people and companies figure out what the hell they’re going to do with it, and how they can use it, and why it’s interesting for them, and I can give talks, do training, help set blogs up, promote stuff online, coach people on more or less anything social-media related, oh, and give advice, of course, people keep coming to me for advice, you know, and a whole lot of other things…”

I also realised that until then, the services that I had advertised were my “side-services” — my branches. In a way, I’ve always tried to do the strategic/advisory stuff undercover. Not very satisfying!

So now, the question this post is leading to: is “New Media Strategist” already old and loaded? What does it sound like? Is “everybody” calling themselves that nowadays? (I hope I don’t come across as pretentious because I consider I have a tad more expertise on the subject than newcomers in the field who have been blogging for 18 months and tweeting for 6…)

One could argue that titles don’t mean much, specially in today’s hypernetworked world, where connections are the most important thing in life (aside from drinking water… and even that could be subject to debate). Reputation, that’s what counts.

I disagree. I may be well-known and respected amongst my peers, but given the nature of my job, my clients are usually outside (even very far outside) the social media bubble. A title of some sort gives people a starting-point to figure you out.

“Social Media Consultant”, in my opinion, is dead from overuse and abuse. “New Media Strategist” seems better to me (because I “came up” with it during that discussion — of course I’d probably heard or seen it somewhere before, but it didn’t sound like something that is being thrown all over the place on Twitter et al these days). Or “Social Media Strategist”? What about “Social Media” itself… does that sound too much like an empty buzzword today (just like “Web 2.0”, which I never liked and honestly, was a media/marketing buzzword from the start). And then, for me, is the added issue of translating things in French. “New Media Strategist” doesn’t translate well — neither does “Social Media”, actually.

Lots of questions, as you can see.

Do you have trouble defining what you do? What do you put on your business card? What do you do? I’d love to exchange stories. And, of course, hear what you think about “New Media Strategist” — as a title in general, and to describe me… if you know me, of course. 🙂
