About the website you’re reading.

13.07.2000 – 13.07.2004 [en]

My weblog turns four today. A brief look back on what has changed since then.

[fr] Mon weblog a quatre ans aujourd'hui.

Four years already that this weblog exists! Over a thousand posts, an insane number of categories, and somewhere between 200 and 550 visitors a day — depending on my posting frequency, the weather, and if Joi mentions one of my posts or not ;-). I have never been a frighteningly prolific blogger, but well, there must be something to be said for keeping it up all these years!

Four years ago, I was at my brother’s, I had been back in Switzerland less than a month after spending a year in India, and I stumbled upon Blogger after seeing it mentioned a few times on the sites of the kind folk who haunted the much-regretted Astounding Web forums.

I couldn’t really figure out what this Blogger thing did, so I created an account, and I saw the light.

I’ve gone from fiercly anonymous to having my name “all over the web”, I now have my own server, I’ve learnt CSS, PHP and MySQL in the process, launched three other websites, and travelled around Europe quite a bit, meeting fellow bloggers.

Blogpipole [fr]

[en] I filled in the online interview at Blogpipole, a French service which collects weblogger profiles.

Switch to WordPress [en]

This blog is now powered by Wordpress.

There we are. This weblog is now run by WordPress. I have a lot to write about the migration, but I am not really in a state to do so now (just look at the time).

A few loose ends need tying up, so if things seem to have disappeared, not to worry: they’ll be back shortly.

On Movable Type 3.0 [en]

The pricing scheme accompanying MT 3.0 isn’t as disastrous as it seemed, after a clarification by SixApart — though it remains “expensive”. I’m waiting for the dust to settle before I decide if I upgrade to MT 3.0, move to WordPress, or stay with MT 2.661.

So, finally, it seems everything is not as bad as everybody has been thinking.

I don’t personally care much about what was “miscommunicated” or what was simply changed by SixApart. What I care about is that instead of my previous calculation which brought the licensing fees I would have had to pay to use the new version of Movable Type for my current/ongoing projects to $600, I would now probably manage with the Personal Edition 13 authors license for $150. Mind you, it’s still expensive for me, but it’s not ludicrous anymore.

SixApart have also clarified what they mean by “weblog” in their licensing restrictions: a weblog is a site powered by Movable Type. If you use 5 different “system weblogs” to make up your site, it’s still just one weblog. I find this pretty reassuring. If the personal license you bought is missing a few authors/weblogs to make you happy, you can add individual licenses for $10 each (per extra author or weblog).

What am I going to do? Since the uproar yesterday, I’ve been doing two things: waiting for the dust to settle (and trust me, there is still a lot of it in the air) and, like others, looking pretty closely at WordPress.

When I left Blogger at the beginning of this year, I had been nastily tempted by WordPress. I had given up on it at the time because it was lacking a few functionalities I wanted, MT being a more mature application. Things have changed now, and between the hierarchical categories, the bunch of really sexy CSS templates, and the fact that I can find the development team on Freenode (not even mentioning that WordPress is completely free), it is a very attractive alternative to MT for me.

But as I said above, there is no rush. I’ll give it a few weeks at least, and maybe wait for both Movable Type 3.0 (the “real” one, not the Developer Edition) and WordPress 1.2 to be out.

Dedicated Server [en]

I’m thinking of getting a dedicated server. Any thoughts?

I’m thinking of getting a dedicated server.

It’s not that I’m unhappy with my kind host, but I’m reaching a point where I would like more control on the server, and where I want to be able to offer an easy solution to friends of mine who are “getting online”.

Thoughts? Got a better deal, anyone?

Archivée! [fr]

Ce site manque d’organisation, ça devient vraiment dur d’y trouver ce qu’on cherche. Quelques liens vers des destinations fréquentes.

[en] A few pointers to stuff on this site I was recently asked about.

Switch to Movable Type [en]

This site is now running under Movable Type.

Welcome to what is going to become the new Climb to the Stars.

My battle with Movable Type has been successful, and I’m importing old entries as fast as I can assign categories to them. I’ve set up redirects from the old site so you can already enjoy the new thing.

The design isn’t final, but I quite like the colours. You’re likely to see broken links, shifting content, and other unnatural stuff while I continue working “live” on the design and architecture. Comments and feedback are welcome as we go along, however; this process is going to include a lot of “hit and miss”.

Things not to worry about:

  • I will set up permanent redirects for the URI’s which will have changed (linkrot prevention)
  • the dev… addresses are temporary.

Hitch your wagon to a star.
