Short Post-SHiFT Note [en]

[fr] SHiFT est terminé. Blogtalk commence.

SHiFT was really nice. Interesting things, writer’s overflow, but not writing. Check out [Suw](http://chocnvodka.blogware.com/)’s notes on [Strange Attractor](http://strange.corante.com/): talks by [Dannie Jost](http://strange.corante.com/archives/2006/09/29/shift_dannie_jost_patents_and_software.php), [Stowe Boyd](http://strange.corante.com/archives/2006/09/29/shift_stowe_boyd_we_make_our_tools_and_they_shape_us.php), [Martin Röll](http://strange.corante.com/archives/2006/09/29/shift_martin_roell_time_for_a_shift.php), [Kevin Cheng](http://strange.corante.com/archives/2006/09/29/shift_kevin_cheng_communicating_concepts_through_comics.php), [Euan Semple](http://strange.corante.com/archives/2006/09/28/shift_euan_semple_the_quiet_revolution.php).

Suw’s talk was great, I’ve finally understood what [ORG](http://www.openrightsgroup.org/) is about — and a bit worried about the situation in Switzerland.

Kudos to the SHiFT team for being so proactive in asking us for feedback during the closing party. Conference organisers everywhere, geek girls would like girly-shaped T-shirts, please! (Reaction to men-shaped T-shirts, however cool: oh, good, another one to sleep in.)

Many things not mentioned. My apologies.

I’m in Vienna now, with a cold, for [Blogtalk reloaded](http://blogtalk.net/). Looking forward to talking with [John Breslin](http://www.johnbreslin.com/blog/) tomorrow, and hoping to get a chance to catch [danah](http://www.zephoria.org/thoughts/) and [Matt](http://photomatt.net) too.

Ongoing: SHiFT [en]

[fr] SHiFT a commencé.

[SHiFT](http://wiki.shift.pt/doku.php) has started, and I’m feeling very guilty about not blogging and photographing everything. Oh well.

Of note for me this morning, two talks: [Lilia](http://blog.mathemagenic.com/) on [personal blogging meeting work blogging](http://blog.mathemagenic.com/2006/09/28.html) and [Laurent](http://ballpark.ch/blog/) on the [lessons learned](http://www.ballpark.ch/blog/english/720/my-shift-talk) during his adventure with [coComment](http://cocomment.com).

A l'étranger jusqu'au 4 [fr]

[en] Off for Shift and Blogtalk. Be back on the 4th. Catch me by e-mail or SMS if you need to communicate.

– (25)26-30th September: [Shift](http://wiki.shift.pt/) in Lisbon, Portugal
– 1st-3rd October: [BlogTalk](http://blogtalk.net/) in Vienna, Austria

I’ve more or less got the trip to Lisbon and the return from Vienna sorted out. I’m in trouble for getting from Lisbon to Vienna during the week-end without emptying my bank account. Anybody else doing this? Got ideas where I should look? (Trains, planes, coaches?)

I’m also tempted to go to India for two months over December-January (get back here in time for [Lift](http://lift07.org/) early February). The problem there is finances: I don’t know yet if I’ll be able to afford it. One idea would be to try and get some consulting work over there (Delhi, Pune, Bangalore…) — if the rates in the industry are worth it. Anybody know what opportunities a videshi bloggy consultant might find there?

Do speak up if we’re going to be in the same place at the same time!

You probably noticed I’ve been [uploading LIFT’06 photographs](http://www.flickr.com/photos/bunny/sets/72057594058518485/) to Flickr since yesterday. I took a whole bunch of really fun photos last night, but upload is slow as slug, so I don’t know when they’ll be up. Thanks for your patience!

Almost all of my photos are CC-licensed. Feel free to use them on your blogs if you’re speaking about the conference — a mugshot or two does tend to liven-up text-only conference notes.

[en] Bloggy Friday: join us at the LIFT'06 Closing Party!

Here are [my draughty notes](http://web.archive.org/web/20071026181521/http://climbtothestars.org/play/lift06_thursday.txt), as is, pretty incomplete and not necessarily intelligible. Use if you wish.

After Lunch [en]

Had a nice lunch with [Robert](http://scobleizer.wordpress.com/), [Anina](http://www.anina.net/), [Anne Dominique](http://annedominique.wordpress.com/) and [Ben](http://www.shamiro.ch/). Food was nice, conversation too, but God! am I tired. (And I don’t even have jetlag to blame.)

Cory Doctorow talking

Cory’s talking about DRM and stuff. It’s interesting, but I’m starting to wonder if there isn’t a real audio quality issue in the room. My hearing is not quite as good as the average person’s, but it doesn’t usually make it difficult for me to follow talks like this. I know I also tend to have trouble “catching” the train of words to follow what somebody is saying. (Call it “keeping in tune” with what is being said, if you like.) So maybe I’m suffering from a conjunction of “could-be-better” audio quality and “could-be-better” ears and listening skills.

Is anybody else in the room having difficulty understanding the speakers?

I think there is weird stuff going on with the wifi too. Is it hopping? Jumping? Flickering? I’m hardly seeing anybody on Bonjour — they come and go — and uploading photos to Flickr is really slow. Are any naughty bloggers in the room using the wifi for P2P stuff?

(And just in case you’re thinking I [complain](http://giussani.typepad.com/loip/2006/02/lift06_opening_.html) too much, I’m having a really nice time here; I’m just looking forward to being able to re-listen to some talks through the (http://www.freestudios.tv/?cdroite=tablo_lift06) made available.)

First Impressions of LIFT'06 [en]

[fr] Premières impressions de LIFT'06.

Venue: not too much trouble finding it, that was nice. [Laurent himself](http://ballpark.ch/blog/) at the ticket desk, that was nice too. [Robert Scoble](http://scobleizer.wordpress.com/) looks younger than I expected (I’m [sitting right in front of him](http://flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/94458716/ “Robert Scoble’s view of the stage.”), didn’t do it on purpose, promise!).

In Line for LIFT'06

Missing in the conference room:

– water (no drinks allowed apart from water, and all I have in my bag is orange juice, and I’m really thirsty) Update: thanks to [David Galipeau](http://galipeau.blogspot.com/), I’ve found the water fountains now.
– more power strips (yeah, I know)

Missing online (update)

– backchannel? (I’m sitting in #lift06 on chat.freenode.net, just in case)
– live audio?
– people using Bonjour/Rendez-Vous… (I’ve opened and announced a document for [collaborative note-taking in SubEthaEdit](http://climbtothestars.org/archives/2004/07/08/taking-collaborative-notes-at-blogtalk/)… just in case, feel free to join if you’re at the conference).

I have a huge problem: I totally suck at understanding non-native speakers talking in English (particularly francophones). Isn’t that amazing, given I’m a francophone myself?
