Why I End Up Sharing Without Reading [en]

A few weeks ago, I came upon an article (which I’m too tired to hunt for right now) which said that a huge number of articles shared through social media (understand: Twitter and Facebook) had not been read by those who share them.

I wasn’t surprised, because I do it regularly.

A few weeks after that, but still a few weeks ago, I shared an article I had just skimmed, and which was a pile of sh*t — and I missed that (also because it was on a topic I hadn’t done my homework on.) Thankfully I was quickly challenged by some of my followers, saw it, went back to the article, realised my mistake, removed it from my timeline (I didn’t want to spread it more), and apologised. I felt really bad.

Just like a car accident is waiting to happen if you habitually text as you drive or take other similar risks: it’s not because you manage to do it 50 times without getting into an accident that you won’t on the 51st.

Since then, I’ve been thinking really hard about this. I consider that being a reliable source is really important. I’m aware that as somebody with a bunch of followers/readers, I have a certain influence. It’s a responsibility. And I take it seriously.

So why do I end up, again and again, sharing links before I read them?

Tonight it dawned on me: it’s because of the way I browse — and maybe also because of how browsers are built.

As I scroll through my Facebook or Twitter timeline, I see article titles and summaries that look really interesting. I see who is sharing them and with what comments. Just as I am a trusted source for some, I have my trusted sources. I open said article in a new tab so that when I am in “reading mode” I can read it (and yes, I do do that). But right now I’m in browsing mode, so I continue scrolling down my timeline.

Do you see the problem, if I don’t share the interesting article right away? When I read it in a few hours or sometimes a few days, there will be no way for me to head back to the post or tweet that brought it to my attention to share it from there — and give credit to my source. So I take a small risk and share an article I know will be interesting and important, right, because I’m going to read it. (Yeah it’s faulty reasoning. But it makes sense in the moment.)

What’s missing here is a way to trace how one got to a given page, sometimes opened in a new tab. It’s even worse in mobile. Or “that page I stuck in Instapaper 5 months ago” — where did it come from?

When I’m “scanning”, I like to stay in “scanning/discovering” mode. When I’m reading, I stay in reading mode. The problem is that the “share” function is tied to the “scanning/discovering” mode. Exception: the stuff I put in Digital Crumble, which is excerpts of what I am currently reading, as I read it.

Deux premières [fr]

[en] Took the boat out with no engine (just sails and a paddle). Kept my nephew for the first time!

Aujourd’hui, deux premières:

  • j’ai sorti le Farrniente sans moteur (pagaie et voile)
  • j’ai gardé mon neveu pour la première fois

Une de mes amies était en visite pour la journée après le Bloggy Friday (qui comptait des fribourgeois, genevois et même bernois!). On avait parlé de sortir le bateau, mais malheureusement, après la dernière régate, on a eu des problèmes de moteur. Je lui avait donc dit que c’était compromis. Devant sa déception, toutefois, je lui ai dit qu’on avait quand même l’option “pagaie + voiles”. Elle a relevé le défi, nous sommes sorties de la place et du port comme des pros, et rentrées non moins admirablement. Il y avait des petits airs, on a pu faire un bon nombre de bords, parler de rêves de vie (ou au moins de vacances) sur l’eau, et croiser La Vaudoise (tiens, je deviendrais bien une femme Pirate, moi).

Ensuite, autre défi d’un tout autre ordre: garder mon neveu de bientôt cinq mois pour la première fois, histoire de donner à mon frère et ma belle-soeur un peu de temps “baby-free”. Eh bien oui, les tatas c’est là pour ça aussi. Après une première vingtaine de minutes à me demander ce que j’allais bien pouvoir faire de ce bébé hurlant (rien de ce que j’essayais ne marchait), un heureux concours de circonstances l’a calmé complètement. J’ai pu faire mon ménage (en petites tranches bien sûr) et finir d’aménager mon nouveau (et amélioré) “coin canapé”.

Bien sûr, deux heures c’est long, j’ai donc passé par le biberon, les chansons, les cent pas dans l’appart, les escaliers, les escaliers encore, et pour finir le jardin parce que c’est plus sympa que les escaliers, au bout d’un moment. Mais il a bien dormi!

Body By You: Starting Today [en]

[fr] Je démarre le programme Body By You, fitness "maison" avec exercices au poids du corps.

Body By YouI started the “Body By You” (Mark Lauren) fitness programme today. I probably would never have bought this book if I had just looked at the cover and “sales” copy surrounding it, but it came recommended by a close friend who actually brought a copy so I could have a look at it.

I started reading and was hooked. This is a very realistic, no-nonsense approach to getting/staying in shape, very close to the stuff I’d read a few years ago on the excellent French site Entrainement-sportif.fr. I’ve always hated the idea of going to the gym. I’ve been doing judo for close to 20 years so I’m reasonably in shape compared to somebody doing “nothing”, but 40 is creeping up on me and I’m definitely not as fit as I was in my twenties (or slim, but that’s another story — they say 1kg per year, don’t they).

What I like about Body By You:

  • no-nonsense, no-bullshit approach
  • bodyweight training you can do anywhere you are
  • full and clear description of exercises, training cycles, schedule (with videos)
  • simple instructions on how to design your personal training schedule (it’s pretty straightforward)
  • 30 minutes 3 times a week!

The basic premise behind Body By You is that the best way to lose “weight” is to increase your metabolism. This means your body burns more calories just to function (better than running for hours or starving yourself with a diet that doesn’t work). The easiest way to do this is to increase your muscle mass. The exercises are designed to do just this, and as they are “global” exercises which use your whole body, they also solidify your core (back problems, anybody?)

The programme contains 125 exercises divided in 5 exercise families: pulling, squatting, perpendicular pushing, in-line pushing, bending. There is a progression in each family from easiest to most difficult. Each day you do one exercise in each family, alternating the upper-body pushing ones. There is an initial assessment to help you determine which exercise to start with, and “upgrade rules” for when to switch to the more difficult exercise.

For example, here’s the one I have trouble with for the “perpendicular pushing” family:

This means I’ll start my programme using the slightly easier “arms shoulder width” version.

I’ll finish the rest of the “evaluation” cycle tomorrow, and start with the programme proper on Monday. My arms hurt already but I’m pretty excited!

Loneliness [en]

[fr] Sur la solitude.

This morning I stumbled upon the article Only The Lonely, in which Stephen Fry talks about depression, wanting to end things, mental health, and loneliness.

Here’s the passage that made me think a bit more about the nature of loneliness:

Lonely? I get invitation cards through the post almost every day. I shall be in the Royal Box at Wimbledon and I have serious and generous offers from friends asking me to join them in the South of France, Italy, Sicily, South Africa, British Columbia and America this summer. I have two months to start a book before I go off to Broadway for a run of Twelfth Night there.

I can read back that last sentence and see that, bipolar or not, if I’m under treatment and not actually depressed, what the fuck right do I have to be lonely, unhappy or forlorn? I don’t have the right. But there again I don’t have the right not to have those feelings. Feelings are not something to which one does or does not have rights.

In the end loneliness is the most terrible and contradictory of my problems. I hate having only myself to come home to. If I have a book to write, it’s fine. I’m up so early in the morning that even I pop out for an early supper I am happy to go straight to bed, eager to be up and writing at dawn the next day. But otherwise…

There are two important things here. The first is that feelings are there, and the question of whether you have the right to them or not is irrelevant. They are there. If you feel this way, then you feel this way. That way? That way. That’s it.

The bit on loneliness got me thinking. Everyone knows how lonely it can be to be in a relationship that has stopped functioning. How one can be at a dinner party surrounded by people and still be lonely.

Loneliness doesn’t have much to do with having human beings around you. What makes you “not lonely” is being connected to others in a meaningful way. Feeling recognized for who you are, and not for a social or professional persona you project when others are around. For me there is no contradiction in what Stephen tells us of his busy social life and his feeling of loneliness. It’s apples and oranges.

Having a social life does not mean you have authentic relationships with others.

Value-Based Pricing: Breaking the Time Barrier [en]

Cela implique une toute autre approche de la relation client et du travail de l'indépendant, très bien expliquée dans le ebook Breaking The Time Barrier. Une heure de lecture en Anglais, un peu plus si vous êtes moins à l'aise. Mais elle va vous faire gagner de l'argent.

Today I read Breaking the Time Barrier. It’s a quick read, an hour or so if you take your time. If you’re a freelancer, you should read it. If you have an hourly rate and are selling your time, you should read it even more. Thanks a lot to Claude for sharing this e-book on the Going Solo Discuss group.

I was first introduced to the concept of value-based pricing by Martin Roell on the occasion of his introductory workshop on consulting at Lift’07. It made perfect sense: if your expertise can solve a client’s problem in 3 minutes, should you really be paid only for three minutes of your time?

As I was explaining to a prospective client of mine Monday morning, when you spend half a day doing an exploratory workshop with me (to try and figure out what the f*** to do with social media, if anything), you’re not paying for four hours of my time. You’re paying to have answers. You’re paying to know what to do. Why would I charge you less if I can help you get there in just four hours than if I dragged you along for two whole weeks?

Since way back when, I’ve tried as much as possible to price my services based on their value to the client, and not based on how long it takes me. Time-based fees make my skin crawl: the client wants to keep the number of hours down, the consultant wants them to go up. It’s a really stupid system. It also implicitly encourages an “employee/employer” relationship, with the client possibly breathing down your neck to make sure you’re making good use of this time of yours he’s buying.

After reading Breaking the Time Barrier, I’ve understood one of my missing links: not putting a number on the value my client will get out of my work — which is a necessary element to pricing my service as an investment.

I’m also always a bit torn about my exploratory workshops: I charge for them separately, because too many times I ended up doing a workshop, writing up proposals, and end up with the client walking away. I realize now that on some of the occasions my proposals were not adequate because I had not understood the monetary value what my client was hoping to get out of the investment they would be making with me. One of my issues is also that a lot of the value I bring is advice, and that is sometimes all my clients need from me. Sometimes all they needed was that initial workshop. I still haven’t really decided how to deal with this, but I realize I need to think about it.

I also find it hard to stand firm sometimes with clients who insist on counting in hours. Business is so formatted to function like this that even when you tell people that you have no hourly rate, also because all your hours are not worth the same, and how many hours you spend on something is your problem and not theirs, and that what is important on their side is the result and value they are going to get, the conversation still ends up drifting back to “ok, sure, but how much will you charge for a day a month?”

I’m also having trouble applying this model to training. Training typically is something with a day rate. How do I provide value-based training? Focus on competencies and outcomes — but then, there is the unknown: how well the student learns. It does not take a fixed effort to teach something to somebody. Some people learn fast, and with others… you can start again from the beginning next month.

So there we are… my questions-in-the-guise-of-musings to Karen in the story.

Vendredi, Bloggy Friday [fr]

[en] Bloggy Friday this Friday July 5th.

J’aurai passé ce #back2blog à publier des articles un peu tard le soir et à l’arrache. C’est pas grave, ça le fait aussi.

Ce matin en route pour le train, je vois que Xavier a publié un article annonçant le prochain Bloggy Friday lausannois. Vendredi 5 juillet. Punaise, moi qui n’ai même pas encore créé l’événement Facebook! C’est chose faite, assise par terre sur le quai de la gare Prilly-Malley, mon ordi sur les genoux et mon iPhone le reliant à internet.

Et j’ai bien fait, parce qu’il y a déjà 8 inscrits, on dira qu’on va avoir droit à un Bloggy Friday d’anthologie.
