Cold Switzerland and New Things [en]

One thing I have succeeded in bringing back from my holidays is the desire and determination to blog. I’m trying to lower the bar, and not worry too much if I seem to be rambling on more than crafting content. I’ve always loved the “interaction/expression” aspect of blogging – over “communication”. Anyway, it’s cold here in Switzerland, and dark, and gloomy, and did I mention it was cold? Today was my first day back at work. I’m a bit disoriented, to be honest, but it went OK enough.

At home tonight I listened to The Secret of a Long Life (a Radiolab episode). It is about our sense of passing time, and how it is linked to memories and novelty. You know, the way the first few days of holiday go slowly by, and then everthing speeds up and suddenly you’re on the plane home? During the first days, everything is new and memorable. So it feels like the days were long. But then your days are less and less different from one another, and time starts shrinking. Taking the research on the subject literally, Sindhu goes off to try and live a week of absolute novelty. Doing only new things, eating only new things, sleeping in a different place every night.

Having just made the decision to spend 10 days of holidays in the same bed in Rajasthan every night instead of in a different place in Nepal every night, of course this had my attention. It also had strong echoes to my early 2019 realisation regarding making memories (yes, another podcast episode involved). Following that, I remember I had been very deliberate, when Aleika came to visit shortly after, about planning various activities to make for more memories. I must admit that over the last years, my focus has moved more towards creating routine and stability. I need it, but I know I also need novelty. How does one find a balance between the two?

All this reminds me of another podcast episode, Making the Good Times Last, which I listened to a few months back. It is about the science of savoring, and this connects with an idea put forward near the end of the Radiolab episode: it’s not just/so much doing new things that counts, but focusing our attention on them. You can see how this fits in with some kinds of mindfulness practice, or the importance of sensory perception in hypnotherapy (yes I still need to write about hypnotherapy).

As I try to navigate through life, I find myself cooking up plans (mental plans) to organise and schedule my life and activities. For example, I brought back a recipe book from Rajasthan: how about I cook one recipe from the book every week? Or, doing new or unusual things. Maybe I should make sure I do it at least once every month? Peak experiences: should I go to the cinema more often, for example? The list can go on and on, and the problem is that if I did try and put this into practice, I would probably quickly end up suffocated by everything I want to do. (I already tend to, just as things are – thanks, hyperactivity.)

So, how much routine? How much newness? How much simply paying attention to things differently? How do I navigate life whilst at the same time respecting my need to spend time in my comfort zone, and my need to discover new and exciting things, and hold down a job? Should I move the furniture around in my flat more? (23 years in the same flat, heavens.) I feel I already don’t have enough time to do all the things I know I enjoy doing, how many more should I explore?

So many questions. I didn’t take a photograph of the lake and the clouds and the mountains with snow on top this morning on my commute – it was stunning – so I’ll leave this post without a photo, for once.

Face Blindness [en]

[fr] Un épisode de Radiolab qui parle de "face blindness", littéralement "être aveugle aux visages". J'ai un peu de ça (je ne reconnais pas les gens, mais je me souviens d'eux immédiatement quand ils me donnent leur nom). Episode intéressant à écouter.

I wrote some time ago about being bad with faces. I remember people, I just have trouble with faces. I’ve been paying more attention to this recently, and realized that I actually do “recognize” people — I know that I know them — but cannot “place” them or “identify” them based on their face alone.

This morning I listened to the Radiolab podcast “Strangers in the Mirror“, about face blindness (I love Radiolab).

Oliver Sacks, the famous neuroscientist and author, can’t recognize faces. Neither can Chuck Close, the great artist known for his enormous paintings of … that’s right, faces.

Oliver and Chuck–both born with the condition known as Face Blindness–have spent their lives decoding who is saying hello to them. You can sit down with either man, talk to him for an hour, and if he sees you again just fifteen minutes later, he will have no idea who you are. (Unless you have a very squeaky voice or happen to be wearing the same odd purple hat.)

Go and listen to it.

Like everything, face blindness is not all-or-nothing. I guess I have some degree of it (not as bad as Chuck or Oliver, though). My strategy is to tell people upfront. I’m also very good with names, so that helps compensate. I find myself using some of the strategies they talk about: looking for some distinctive feature in the face, making a mental note of eye colour or eyebrow shape, teeth. Some detail I can hang onto.

I’ve realized that I can in fact “recognize” or place people based on their faces, but it takes me a lot of time and energy and concentration to do so. Sometimes hours or days after I’ve seen the person. I’ll bump into somebody at the supermarket, I know I know the person, we say hi, but I have no clue who the person is. I’ll keep thinking about it, try and visualise the person (face, voice, movement, expressions) and see what context appears in my mind.

When watching movies, I’m often crap at differentiating actors that look similar. “Is this somebody we already know, or is it a new character?” Or if I see an actor in another movie/series, it can take me a long time to be certain I’ve recognized them. For example, Lisa Edelstein (who plays Dr. Cuddy in House) was playing the role of a doctor (!) in an episode of Without a Trace that I was watching a week or two ago. It took me a good 10-15 minutes to be sure this character was not the same as the in-house FBI psychiatrist (also a woman roughly the same age with long dark hair), another 10-15 to be certain I’d seen her before and realize she was Cuddy.

So, is my “problem” in the face blindness range or is it in the “link the face with the person” one? I wonder if there are any tests available for this kind of thing. I’m curious.

In Love With Evernote [en]

Cette application vous permet de prendre des notes dans toutes les formes (audio, texte, et image avec un bout de reconnaissance de caractères), les taguer, et les synchroniser via le serveur d'Evernote avec votre accès web ou l'application qui tourne sur votre ordinateur. Il y a également un plugin Firefox. Même si vous n'avez pas d'iPhone, je vous encourage vivement à voir en quoi Evernote peut vous être utile.

Pour ma part, voici quelques utilisations que j'en fais:

  • photos de cartes de visite, d'horaires de bus/train, d'heures d'ouverture de commerces
  • liste-photos de choses prêtées
  • notes de recherche ramassées sur le web
  • idées à creuser quand je serai en ligne
  • choses à écrire/bloguer
  • choses à acheter
  • livres lus et films vus
  • photos des choses que j'ai laissées au chalet, pour savoir si j'y ai déjà un pyjama ou non
  • ... et je cherche encore!

When I told you about my favourite iPhone apps, I wasn’t sure yet whether I’d like Evernote or not, as I had only just installed it.

I now know.

Evernote is your ubiquitous backup brain. It’s a place to store all the stuff you want to remember, be it snapshots (with text recognition to some extent), text, or audio notes. You can add notes and access them from the web, the desktop app (Mac <strong>and</strong> Windows, please), or your iPhone or Windows mobile phone.

If you have an iPhone and aren’t using Evernote yet, do not waste one second. Download the free Evernote iPhone app immediately, and sign up for an account. Even if you don’t have an iPhone (or a phone running Windows mobile), I really recommend you sign up, install the desktop app, and take a close look to see how it can be useful to you.

You should also install the Firefox extension or the bookmarklet if you’re using another browser.

Now that you’re done, here are some screenshots and ideas to get started using Evernote with your iPhone. First, here’s what it looks like:

The little “Tips” tab near the bottom has a bunch of good ideas in it that made me go “oooh” and “aaaah” as I read through them. Amongst other things, I learnt to take screenshots on my iPhone:

You can easily record any kind of note from your iPhone. Take a snapshot, or record some thoughts in audio format. The notes sync with the server, which will in turn sync with your desktop app — so you have everything everywhere.

As you can see, notes are tagged. You can prevent the iPhone from syncing over 3G if you’re worried about bandwidth limits. I’m personally so way under mine that I turned it on.

Here’s a list of what I’ve been putting in Evernote so far:

  • business cards (a bit disappointing with the MacBook iSight, haven’t tried with the iPhone camera so far — but I was a bit let down by my high hopes for textual recognition in photographs; expect it to work “a little”)
  • bus and train timetables (Lausanne and elsewhere)
  • opening hours
  • photos of things left at the chalet
  • photos of things lent to people (books, DVDs)
  • ideas for blog posts (with or without photo)
  • things I need to look up or think about
  • books I’ve read and movies I’ve seen
  • things I want to buy
  • “quotes” from books I’m reading

Other ideas:

  • recipes
  • research material
  • & (limited here only by creativity and current needs)

Now, even if you tag your stuff, the pile of notes is going to build up, and you might want a little more organisation. You store notes in notebooks. Here are some of those I’ve created (with the desktop app):

Notebooks can be public. For example, “Things Read and Seen” is online for everybody to see.

As notes may be a little slow to load on the iPhone (and connectivity might abandon you) you can mark some notes as favorites — they will be available offline.

With the Firefox extension, you can put snippets of web pages into notes (just highlight and click on Evernote), as well as whole pages. You can import bookmarks and notes from delicious or Google Notebook.
