Accessibility: People Who Command Their Computer by Speech [en]
Creating a new weblog post is pretty painless. I have a dictation shortcut which inserts the markup and placeholders for text and title. Let me know if I start flooding you.
Mozilla seems to lack accessibility components (MSAA) included in Internet Explorer and other Microsoft programs, which make them easier to use by voice. With Internet Explorer for example, a hyperlink is automatically selected when you pronounce the hyperlink text, so that you can follow it. In Mozilla, I have to tab my way around or hope that the site I’m visiting has provided access keys for each hyperlink (is that even possible?)
More on this topic once I have figured it out.
Update 31.10.02: actually, Mozilla has top-notch support for MSAA, but Dragon doesn’t activate it. What a pity!
Hiatus – Repetitive Strain Injury [en]
In case you hadn’t noticed, this site is on hiatus for medical reasons.
The pain in my wrists has not gone away. Actually, it got worse. Now that I’m keeping away from keyboards and mice as much as possible, the situation is a bit better.
My bet is that I have some form of RSI – I say it’s pretty mild, as I can still type, but my employer says serious, as the prospect of sick leave is looming up if nothing is done. For those of you in the US particularly, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is just one of the forms RSI can take, and I’m pretty sure I don’t have CTS.
Why do I have this? Nobody knows for sure, for the moment. Probably a combination of bad posture and long-time overuse of my body to make it do things it isn’t supposed to be doing (playing with mice and keyboards). Probably my nerves and tendons protesting pretty loudly. I have an appointment with a neurologist in a couple of weeks. We’ll see what he says.
I’ve ordered a whole bunch of ergonomical equipment at work, and I’m keeping an eye on my posture in front of the computer, as well as inserting a little bit of light excercise into my life. I’m waiting for my speech recognition program any day now.
If you have even mild pains in your elbows and wrists while or after using the computer (especially your “mouse wrist”), please don’t wait until it hurts “enough” to take it seriously and see a doctor. I had mild pains in my wrists and elbows for ages before they became so acute I just had to stop typing (over a few weeks’ time). The RSI mailing list is a great source of information.

Multilingue! [en]
Vous qui aimez mélanger les langues, et qui proposez allégrement à vos lecteurs des liens vers des sites anglais, français, québécois, helvètes, belges ou allemands (bon, je ne vais pas faire toute la liste!) — sachez qu’il y a dorénavant bien plus élégant que mes petits drapeaux html. Daniel nous explique comment indiquer la langue d’un lien en css (oui je sais, ça sonne bête et c’est même probablement faux de le dire comme ça — mais vous me comprenez.)
Bon, moi je fais encore bien pire: non seulement je fais des liens vers des sites tantôt francophones, tantôt anglophones, mais en plus je m’amuse (comme Martine, Romain, Emmanuelle et d’autres encore) à écrire dans les deux langues. Ce serait cool d’avoir un moyen CSS-structural-tout-beau-machin pour différencier le texte français du texte anglais (pour le moment, ce sont les mêmes petits drapeaux qui s’en chargent.)
Au fait, que met-on dans hreflang lorsque le site linké est bilingue?
