A Data Management Fantasy

Mon rêve: un système qui cacherait sur un espace donné de mon SSD (disons 50GB) les fichiers les plus récemment ouverts se trouvant sur mon disque dur externe. Ainsi, j'aurais à portée de main et sur disque dur rapide tous mes fichiers courants. Vous connaissez une solution qui fait ça?

I’m now running a happy MacBook with a 120Gb SSD (too big or to small depending on how you look at it, but I was in a hurry and dependant on what was in stock in the shop). I have an external 500Gb HDD to store all my junk on.

And here’s my dream. Wouldn’t it be nice if I could devote a certain amount of space on the SSD to my files, say 50Gb, and have that space occupied by cached copies of the files from the external drive that I most recently used? When I modify the files, the cached copies and those on the HDD would sync. And if I haven’t touched a file for long enough, it would be removed from the cache to free up space.

Like that my “current” files would be on the super-fast SDD and close at hand when I’m on the road.

I’m sure a solution to do this already exists — heard of anything?

Hoosgot: The Lazyweb is Back!

One of the great things about the internet is that it brings people and ideas closer. One of the ways I (and many others) use it is to find things, or make sure the great idea we just had hasn’t already been implemented somewhere before we start building it.

Many years ago, when trackbacks were young and the the Internet Topic Exchange was hot, some brave folks put their heads and fingers together to give birth to The Lazyweb. If you had a request or a question, you would blog about it, send a trackback and a small prayer to the lazyweb, and maybe the lazyweb would answer with a solution. (As you’ve understood, the “lazyweb” is the community of people sending requests and keeping an eye on those from their brethren.)

I sent a few requests its way at the time.

Unfortunately,spam killed the lazyweb.

Yesterday, Dave Sifry announced the birth of hoosgot, reincarnation of the lazyweb.

So, how do you send your requests over to hoosgot? Simply mention hoosgot in post or Twitter message, and it will appear on the website and in the associated RSS feed — which you should definitely subscribe to and keep an eye on.

Java and FreeMind on my MacBook

Ah, well, the Lazyweb was retired, looks like I missed that. We can just go about tagging posts with lazyweb, though.

I used Freemind as a mind-mapping application on my iBook. Unfortunately, it won’t start on my MacBook. I’ve looked in system profiler and it tells me about plugins for two Java versions.

Links in WordPress Comments not Linking

Les URLs dans les commentaires de ce blog ne sont pas transformés en liens, alors qu'ils le devraient. Appel aux idées pour résoudre ce problème.

Lazyweb, hear my call!

When people type URLs in my comments, they aren’t converted into links. WordPress should do this, but it’s not doing it. I don’t know where to start troubleshooting.

Suggestions and solutions will be thankfully tried out :-)

Tag me!

J'aimerais un site qui permettrait de commander un T-shirt (plus ou moins unique!) sur lequel une série de tags (à  choix) serait imprimée.

Here’s a site I would love (if it already exists, forgive me, and if it doesn’t, all you developpers get to work, please). It would allow me to print a set of tags on a T-shirt and buy the T-shirt. Easy and silly, huh?

Better: it would allow me to directly import my Flickr tags and print those. Or my blog tags. Or my del.icio.us tags. Or it would allow my friends to submit tags for me (“Tag me!” — get it?).

Optional: add the url of a chosen tagspace (Technorati, Flickr public, Flickr user, personal…).

A plea to the Lazyweb…

Wiki Spam on PhpWiki

Right, I could use some help here, particularly from those of you who are more in touch with the wiki-world than I am at present.

SpiroLattic is a very inactive wiki. However, it does contain some useful pages which are regularly visited, and I’m sick of removing wiki spam from it (the wiki-spam actually succeeded in wiping the Home Page, as the older clean versions of it are not in the database anymore).

I need suggestions for a wiki engine (PHP/MySQL preferred) into which I will be able to import my existing PhpWiki 1.3 alpha something pages, and which is not too vulnerable to wiki spam. I’d like to be able to keep the existing layout, but I don’t think that’s really an issue with today’s wiki engines.
