Events in WordPress [en]

Toute aide serait bienvenue.

Besides using WordPress as a blogging tool, a client of mine would like to use it to display a page of upcoming events. I’ve dug out a number of plugins which *somewhat* do the job, but getting things to work exactly as we want is proving to be a pain in the neck.

As I’ve been stuck on this for a few weeks now and still see no light, I’m offering this problem to the collective mind out there in hope that a bright solution pops up somewhere before we go live (which is… very soon — hear my desperate plea for help).

**Here’s what we want**

* events should be posts (this rules out [Shrikee’s Events Plugin](http://www.sothq.net/projects/events-plugin/))
* events have a start date, and an end date — time is unnecessary (this rules out [RS Event](http://www.sargant.com/blog/wordpress-plugins/rs-event/))
* events should show up in the normal flow of posts and on their own category page (we don’t want them on the home page, but I can exclude the category manually, so that’s a non-issue)
* we should be able to display upcoming events on a WordPress page (I’ll stick whatever code is needed in the template for that page) — “upcoming”, here, meaning events whose end date is not yet past.

**Partial solutions**

At first, I thought about using [upcoming](http://upcoming.org/) or [eventful](http://eventful.com/), but for quite a few reasons this won’t work out in our situation.

[Event Calendar](http://wpcal.firetree.net/) seemed like a good candidate, although we didn’t really need the “calendar” itself. I hacked the layout of the event posts so they displayed OK. However, the main bit is missing. Event Calendar [provides a way](http://wpcal.firetree.net/advanced-queries/) to list all the events “after today”, by calling http://blog.address/?ec3_after=today for example. Unfortunately, this doesn’t work on our setup (probably something we did to the rather hacked theme. I’ve had a look at the source code but couldn’t really figure out what happened when that variable was passed, so was unable to reproduce anything ressembling it in a Page template.

Another problem is that this will not show events which have started yesterday but which are not yet over, if I’m not mistaken.

Last but not least, we have two event subcategories, so I’d have to create two (or even three) separate event pages — but I guess that if I manage to make one, filtering posts by category shouldn’t be too hard.

Another solution would be to use [Posts Expire and Posts Begin](http://wunder-ful.com/wordpress-plugins) [as described in this forum post](http://wordpress.org/support/topic/106025) I stumbled upon yesterday. Again, these plugins provide a way to call “posts which have not yet expired” with a particular URL: home/?orderby=post_end_date. Again, I haven’t manage to dig out the code and stick it in a Page template — trying to rewrite a pretty URL to that one is source of much hair-tearing upon this server I have very little control on, and I haven’t found a way to make it work.

The other problem I’d have to work around if using these plugins is that expired posts are not displayed in the blog anymore. I’m not sure what code in the plugin takes care of that, but it would have to be commented out.

**Help**

So, I have two partial solutions here, but I’m stuck making progress on either. Do you have any ideas which could help me out — either to make one of my partial solutions a working one or to find a third one?

I’d really *really* appreciate help on this one. Thanks a lot.

WordPress not Sending Pings Anymore [en]

[fr] WordPress fait des caprices et a arrêté d'envoyer des pings automatiques (trackback, pingback) sans me prévenir. Grinche.

Once upon a time, I loved WordPress because I didn’t have to enter trackback addresses manually anymore — at least, not when I was linking other WordPress blogs, or pingback-enabled blogging tools.

Those days are gone, and I’m not quite sure when it started. I’ve been having a creepy feeling for sometime that I wasn’t getting as many “internal” (CTTS to CTTS) trackbacks as I should. Today, I checked.

Heck.

You know me, I specialize in weird, not-so-reproducible issues. So, it wouldn’t be that WordPress has stopped sending pings altogether, no, that would be too simple.

WordPress has stopped sending pings *most of the time*. But sometimes, every now and again, it sends one. Or a couple. Or three.

What is going on, would you say?

Basic Bilingual and Bunny's Technorati Tags Plugins Updated for WordPress 2.1 [en]

– [Basic Bilingual 0.3](/code/basic-bilingual.zip) ([.phps](/code/basic-bilingual.phps))

The previous, WordPress 2.0-compatible versions are still available:

– [Basic Bilingual 0.21](/code/basic-bilingual-0.21.zip) ([.phps](/code/basic-bilingual-0.21.phps))

**Warning:** these old versions suffer from the [empties custom fields problem](http://markjaquith.wordpress.com/2007/01/28/authorization-and-intentionorigination-verification-when-using-the-edit_post-hook/). Don’t use them with 2.1.

**Disclaimer:** I’m swamped with work, haven’t upgraded yet, and haven’t tested the new versions of the plugins. Use carefully. Let me know if there are glitches. Bunny’s Technorati Tags is [the very version Sudar put online](http://sudarmuthu.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/01/bunny-tags.zip) (I’m making it available here mainly as there are links to it out there beyond my control, not the least from the [wp-plugins.org wiki](http://dev.wp-plugins.org/wiki/) which has been closed to editing due to spam.) For **Basic Bilingual, however,** I adapted the code Sudar had added to Bunny Tags, but I don’t fully understand if it works. **Backup, try gingerly, and please leave comments here to let others (and myself) know if it works or breaks.**

Thanks.

Why I Got Lost in LeWeb3 Videos [en]

[fr] Petit tour des problèmes d'ergonomie qui ont été la source de mon billet précédent concernant vpod.tv.

Right, I’ve somewhat figured out how I managed to [get lost in the LeWeb3 videos](http://climbtothestars.org/archives/2007/01/20/videos-leweb3/) and not find things like permalinks or slider bars.

When you’re on the [fullscreen page](http://my.vpod.tv/channel.html), no controls are clearly visible. Where is the pause button? There is “launch your TV” (tried that, but never go the answer to what it does, too slow to load for me) but that’s about it. When you click on individual videos, the URL never varies from http://my.vpod.tv/channel.html. Well, I poked around as I could, and gave up.

One thing I had overlooked was the four little icons near the bottom of the video which is playing (you can click on all the photos I’m showing here to access notes and extra info):

20070121-vpod-fullscreen-navigation

Which one would you click on? Well, after I really started to suspect there must be a way out, I tried them all. The third one was the most interesting to me:

20070121-vpod-fullscreen-menu-buttons

To be fair, when you mouseover the buttons, some text is displayed. For example, text for the four buttons in the first photograph is “Sound”, “Video Greeting”, “Menu”, “ShowHide”. Unfortunately, you **do** have to mouseover to get to that information, as the icons themselves are not all self-explanatory. I definitely do not expect to find a menu listing of useful stuff I might want to do under the vpod.tv logo.

One shouldn’t expect a site user to drag his mouse over every portion of the screen which might be clickable to see what it is. Scanning available options is a job meant for the eye, not the hand. To make matters worse here, the mouseover text takes roughly twice the time a normal “title” tooltip would take to appear (on my system). A good two seconds. Who knows — I might even have mouseovered those icons and come to the conclusion there were no tooltips, when they didn’t appear after the expected delay.

The problem repeats itself. Look at the vertical bar of icons in the screenshot above. Have a guess. What do you expect them to do? Well, here is what the tooltips say, from top to bottom: “Share”, “Get link”, “RSS feed”, “Info”, “Flag it”, “Help”, and “About us…” — you’ll notice that the same vpod.tv logo is used for the “About us…” link as for the “Menu” one. It makes much more sense for “About us…”

In short, [rather poor usability](http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com/mysterymeatnavigation.html) for essential navigation items and functionalities on a page like this.

Now, I’m still hunting for a permalink to the video I’m watching, remember? “Get link” sounds like a good one, though “Info” is tempting too (chances I’d click on that directly if I start mouseovering from the bottom, which would be logical as that is where my cursor was).

20070121-vpod-fullscreen-getlink-dialog

Bingo! There’s my permalink. Let’s click on it.

20070121-vpod-video-page-info

Well, that worked as expected. I get to see the video, I can display useful information about it, and I can even download it. Nice. The only sad part is that the URL in the address bar has changed from http://portal.vpod.tv/leweb3/69391 to http://portal.vpod.tv/#page:player. What a pity!

A slider bar appears when I put my mouse over the video, and there is a pause/play button. I’m still not sure if such features are available in the [fullscreen version](http://my.vpod.tv/) and I couldn’t find them, or simply not available. The slider works, but unfortunately doesn’t tell me which moment of the video I’m aiming for, so it’s a bit hit-and-miss if, say, you want to jump to minute 8 of my video to hear me try to talk (hint, hint).

So, I started watching [my panel](http://portal.vpod.tv/leweb3/69391). The sound is good, and that’s pretty cool (as I heard that it was almost unintelligable during the conference for people who were listening in on the stream). Unfortunately, somebody must have been a little overenthusiastic about compression and the small amount of key frames, because LeWeb3 speakers seem to all have contracted a really horrible skin disease which makes unsightly blemishes appear on their skin at regular intervals:

Seems like [Scott Rafer](http://rafer.wirelessink.com/) and I should both go and see a dermatologist pretty quickly, doesn’t it?

Flock Sync Issue Solved! [en]

[fr] Problème de synchro de bookmarks avec Flock réglé!

Yay! The really [exasperating](http://twitter.com/stephtara/statuses/1711993) behavior Flock was putting up by [refusing to sync my favorites unless I restarted the browser](http://steph.wordpress.com/2006/12/13/when-does-flock-synchronize-my-favorites/) has now come to an end.

It seems that a file named flock_fq_default_in.rdf (in Library, Flock stuff, profile, you’ll find it if you need to) was corrupted. So I shut down Flock a couple of times, made sure my bookmarks were in sync, and deleted the file.

Now everything seems to be running smoothly! Flying Home Tomorrow With Easyjet. Or Not?

I’m supposed to fly home tomorrow from Gatwick. If you’ve been anywhere else than under a rock these last days, you’ll know that [flights out of London have been severely disrupted](http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6202349.stm).

This morning, I called [Easyjet](http://easyjet.com) to see if there was any chance my flight would be delayed or cancelled. Their website didn’t yield much information besides the standard [arrivals page](http://easyjet.com/EN/flying/arrivals.asp), which told me that one flight to Geneva yesterday afternoon had been cancelled.

Anyway, the lady was very reassuring. She took my flight number, and told me that the flight yesterday had arrived on time, and that I should be fine.

Tonight, I checked the arrivals page again, and saw that both flights to Geneva this evening had been cancelled. Ouch!

This is where it gets bad. I tried to call Easyjet again, but all their lines are closed after 8pm. Great! Even the one you reach after spending 10 minutes in the menus, where you choose “if your flight has been cancelled, please press 2”. They just tell you to use the website if you want to cancel or change a flight. Well, that’s fine with me, except… For some reason, Easyjet doesn’t recognize the e-mail address I used to book the flight. They’ll send me a newsletter to the address, sure, but will say they’ve never heard of it when I try to use it to log into the website.

**And** the technical support line is £1/minute.

If I know there is a good chance of my flight being cancelled, I’d like to know about it so that I can make other plans. Change my flight, go back to Leeds, take the Ferry, whatever. What I’m worried about is that my flight is after 8pm. What if it’s cancelled, and I’m supposed to “contact my airline”?

All this is making me somewhat grumbly. I’d really like to get back home for Christmas.

*Update: I sent an e-mail to Easyjet about the e-mail address issue. I’ll receive a response from them withing 20 working days. How’s that for an SLA on e-mail responses?*

Hairy .htaccess Dreamhost WordPress Problem [en]

[fr] Un des derniers problèmes qui me résistent sur le nouveau serveur.

Here’s roughly what I wrote in a support ticket I sent Dreamhost this morning. If you have any suggestions, I’ll take them.

> Hello,

> I have a site http://cafecafe.ch on which I have installed wordpress
(http://cafecafe.ch/wp/ -> displays as http://cafecafe.ch/blog with
Filosofo Homepage-Control plugin).

> That server has a subdirectory http://cafecafe.ch/membres/ which is
password-protected using .htaccess. Inside is another wordpress
install http://cafecafe.ch/membres/wp.

> I had this set up on my previous host and it worked fine.

> Now, if I go to http://cafecafe.ch/membres/ the request is caught be
the blog installed in http://cafecafe.ch/wp/, and I’m shown the page
http://cafecafe.ch/blog/.

> To make sure it wasn’t a conflict between the two wordpress installs,
I created an empty directory http://cafecafe.ch/test/ which I tried to
password-protect in the same way. The problem is the same (going to
http://cafecafe.ch/test/ displays http://cafecafe.ch/blog). If I
comment out the “request valid-user” line of the .htaccess, I get to
see the directory listing.

> Similarly, if I come back to http://cafecafe.ch/membres and comment
out that line in .htaccess, both wordpress installs work fine, with
permalinks and all (only the private blog isn’t protected anymore,
which won’t do it).

> I’ve tried not doing the password protection manually, and using what
is provided in the panel for that, but the problem remains exactly the
same.

> Weird, isn’t it?

> Hope you can help me out on this. Tried checking error logs but they
were empty.

WordPress DreamHost WiFi Arghl! [en]

[fr] Rah! que de problèmes.

Somebody please tie me up before I start screaming or kill somebody. I can’t stay connected to the wifi network here more than a few minutes. Dreamhost aren’t responding to my support tickets (we’re way past the 24 hour response time). This site (CTTS) is “working” (meaning, it displays more or less, and I can access the admin area and post and do stuff I normally expect to do on a blog). Another of my sites (client site behind password), which is also WordPress, which I transferred the same way (dump database, rsync files, import database) vaguely displays at times, lets me in the admin area, but doesn’t let me do anything once I’m in there (dashboard only).

Add to that I’m not really enthusiastic about the title of the panel I’m on, but unfortunately I don’t have anything better to offer.

Arghl!
